How spray foam is priced

Spray foam is priced by the board foot: one square foot of surface at one inch of thickness. A 1,000 square foot crawl space ceiling foamed to two inches is 2,000 board feet, and a quote that lists board feet, foam type and finished thickness is one you can compare against any other bid. Some contractors quote per square foot at a stated thickness instead; the two are the same number written differently, as long as the thickness is on the page.

Two Canadian pricing guides fetched in September 2026 give the spread. Spray-Foam.ca, a Quebec-centred national guide, lists $1.00 to $1.50 per board foot, or $2.50 to $4.50 per square foot for open-cell and $3.50 to $7.00 per square foot for closed-cell at typical thickness. Bhumi Calculator's Canada page, dated 4 January 2026, lists British Columbia at $1.60 to $2.40 per square foot for open-cell and $2.95 to $4.75 per square foot for closed-cell. The gap between the two guides comes down to thickness assumptions, so treat them as brackets, not Kamloops quotes. All figures are CAD.

Open-cell versus closed-cell on the invoice

Closed-cell costs more per board foot than open-cell, but you buy less of it. A Canadian closed-cell product such as Elastochem's Insulthane Extreme is rated R-6.03 per inch at four inches (long-term thermal resistance), while the same maker's open-cell Insulthane 450 NM is rated R-3.8 per inch. To reach a given R-value, open-cell needs roughly one and a half to two times the thickness, which is why open-cell is the cheaper choice in a deep 2x6 wall cavity and closed-cell is the cheaper choice where there is only two or three inches of depth, such as a rim joist or the inside of a metal shop panel.

Closed-cell also does two extra jobs that open-cell does not: at sufficient thickness it acts as the vapour barrier the BC Building Code requires, and it stiffens whatever it is sprayed on. On a Kamloops crawl space wall or a Barnhartvale shop that saves the cost of a separate poly and strapping step, which belongs in the comparison even though it never shows up as a line item.

What moves a Kamloops quote up or down

Thickness is the biggest lever, because it multiplies every square foot. Access is next: a tight 18-inch crawl space in an older Westsyde bungalow takes longer per board foot than an open shop wall, and an attic with vermiculite or knob-and-tube wiring has to be dealt with before any foam goes on. Spray-Foam.ca lists project size, thickness, accessibility, provincial labour rates and new construction versus retrofit as the main drivers; Bhumi Calculator adds that attics run 15 to 25 percent more than walls and that colder provinces see a 10 to 15 percent premium in the cold months.

Distance matters in the Thompson valley. A rig travelling to Chase, Barriere or Sun Peaks carries a mobilization cost that a Sahali job does not, which is why smaller rural jobs are often grouped or paired with a neighbour's work.

Typical project brackets

Spray-Foam.ca's 2026 guide gives project brackets that line up with what Kamloops homeowners ask about: rim joists $1,500 to $3,000, a crawl space $2,500 to $7,000, basement walls $3,000 to $8,000, an attic $4,000 to $10,000 or more, and a full 2,000 square foot house $15,000 to $30,000 or more. Bhumi Calculator's worked example for 1,500 square feet of closed-cell lands at $4,100 to $7,350, with materials at 45 to 55 percent of the total and labour at 35 to 45 percent.

Reading a quote before you sign

It should also say whether a thermal barrier coating or drywall is included where foam will stay exposed, since the BC Building Code requires that protection in living and storage space, and whether the contractor is a Home Performance Contractor Network member, which the BC Hydro and FortisBC insulation rebates require. If a quote is missing any of those, ask; a contractor who prices by the board foot will have them ready.
