Barriere is 66 kilometres north of Kamloops on Highway 5, a district municipality since December 2007 with about 1,765 people, where the Barriere River meets the North Thompson. Forestry is about three quarters of the jobs. It is colder than Kamloops, with a January mean of minus 6.5 degrees against the city's minus 2.7, and wetter, at roughly 486 millimetres a year against Kamloops's 278.
Barriere also lives with the 2003 McLure fire, which destroyed 72 homes and 9 businesses and pushed 3,800 people out; a good part of the housing stock is post-2003 rebuilds alongside older rural homes and working shops. The colder winters mean rim joists and crawl spaces matter more here than in the valley, and a heated shop needs the roof foamed as well as the walls.
